On 15th and 16th July, 15 young people participated in a Level One Gym Instructing course in Bristol.
The two-day course combines both theory and practical learning, and is the foundation for a career in the fitness industry.
The training culminated in the young people getting some real world experience, delivering a 30-minute gym session to a 'client' from outside.
At Empire we are passionate about offering practical opportunities for young people to build their life skills, confidence and employability.
This course was the start of a series of training workshops we will be delivering, as part of our Box Careers programme.
And visiting work place outlets across the region is a key part of that, as it broadens understanding of the market place and what opportunities are out there. In this instance, the young people went to Fitness First in Bath to experience coaching first hand.
They then went on to learn all about the systems of the body, and the key principles in how to coach and instruct gym-based exercise.
Head of Programmes at Empire Megan said : "This was a great chance for young people to learn some new skills amongst their peers, and put these to the test. By delivering a session they were able to gauge their understanding, and put this learning to some practical use."
Adding, "There was a great attitude from all the participants, and a real positive atmosphere was created across the two days.
We look forward to seeing the next step on their journey."
The impact of community based training for some young people cannot be underestimated. Being able to learn in a safe, and inclusive space that young people are comfortable in can be vital, particularly for those whose learning experiences in the past may not have been great.
And one young person outlined this saying, " This is the first qualification that I have ever achieved."
The next step for this group of young people is attending a CV workshop at the gym, where we can support them in their career pathway and get them more ready for the workplace.
